P13-Our Lady of Walsingham

The originator of this badge certainly had a good eye for a clever design. Flanked by two eagles is the annunciation lily pot, above which is a crown. The whole composition forms a crowned letter M for Mary, with the crown signifying the Virgin’s position as Queen of Heaven.

Original found in Salisbury.

15th century.

23x30mm A pair of eagles flanking the annunciation lily pot; above all, a crown.
